This is another milestone, a vital growth for MID-P. Three day training on Knowledge Management (KM) was held in Kinna in July 2019 (5th-8th). The training has put MID-P on a new trajectory of focusing and utilizing its Knowledge based assets. The organization is deeply grateful to the Catholic Organization for Relief and Development Aid (Cordaid) for supporting the training.

KM is the process through which an organization generates value from intellectual and knowledge based assets. The purpose of KM is to gather, categorize, store and spread all knowledge that is needed to make the organization both grow and prosper.  Knowledge is generated from packaged information as well as from lessons learnt. An organization will not be knowledgeable accidentally.  Indeed growth does not happen via accident, it has to be planned for. Knowledge defines an organization and separates it from other competitors; therefore how MID-P manages knowledge will give it the edge over other organizations n the NGO Sector. How MID-P leverages on its knowledge asset are critical for its survival and above all determine how its products and services will be viewed by the community and other stakeholders.  For instance a project proposal development is in principle the selling of the organizational knowledge to a donor.  Studies have shown that organizations are mostly much less than the sum of its knowledge parts; tacit knowledge, repositories and others.

Knowledge that exists in the minds of the people (Tacit Knowledge) is the most critical. Tacit Knowledge should be unlocked –it must be translated into Explicit Knowledge.  Knowledge cannot be separated from the bearer and MID-P leadership has an obligation to encourage and nurture individuals to share their knowledge. This could be done through strengthening of four pillars: Management and Organization, Infrastructure (soft and hardware), People & Culture and Content Management Systems. The participants developed an action plan, which will be implemented in the months to come.

Implementing KM must be supported by the top Leadership; there is need to develop a policy. Also the leadership needs to understand the higher policy statements (Vision, Mission and Goal) of MID-P in terms of knowledge.  It is a good practice that the knowledge within the organization resonates with the global and national thinking.
