Introduction of MID-P at Samburu County Steering Group meeting

The CSG meeting took place on 11th March 2025 at the county commissioner’s office. The meeting  was attended by several departments from the County Government of Samburu like water, livestock, health, nutrition,  agriculture, education, peace and security,  as well as development and humanitarian partners like PACIDA, NDMA, SND, MID-P  and Food for the Hungry, and  chaired by the Deputy Governor of  Mr. Gabriel Lenengwesi and co-chaired by the Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Langat Mutai.

Each team lead from the different departments and organizations got to share their updates and briefs from their sectors. The discussions were very insightful and gave highlights of the main issues within the Samburu community as follows:

  • Repair of broken boreholes in Samburu North and East to enable the community to access enough water
  • Declining milk production in the county due to decrease in livestock feeds and pasture
  • Livestock department partnered with Kenya Defense Force and did livestock vaccination
  • Increasing cases of malnutrition in Samburu county
  • On going capacity building of health workers in Samburu North and East to better handle cases of malnutrition
  • Education is being affected due to cases of insecurity
  • Food resource in secondary school has been affecting learning
  • Need for climate resilient crops that will adapt to the climatic conditions of the areas

MID-P PM, Mr. Ibrahim Kabelo was given a chance to introduce the organization to the partners, where he pointed out the year it began,  focus area, and MID-P’s new strategic plan 2025-2029, which includes plans for the organization to expand its area of operation to neighboring counties of Samburu and Marsabit. He explained that the reason for the expansion of operation is because MID-P  operates within Isiolo County, which  shares most of their resources with Samburu and Marsabit, and since MID-P depends entirely on donor for project implementation, they plans to extend its operational area as soon as they receive funds for project implementation within Samburu County, possibly before the end of the year 2025.The meeting ended  after Food for the Hungry, another new NGO in Samburu County did its presentation and introduction to the CSG.

The visit to Samburu County was eye opening for MID-P because, the team observed that the County was vast and there were many opportunities for work for a humanitarian and development organizations like MID-P. As explained by the CEC environment and CDC, the County has a lot of challenges and needs in areas like, water, humanitarian assistance, natural resource management, agriculture, education and livelihood support, all these areas align with MID-P focus areas for the new 2025-2029 strategic plan and therefore giving MID-P a chance to impact the lives of the community members in Samburu County. The team also realized from the CSG meeting that despite there being many opportunities, challenges and needs within the County, there are very few development and humanitarian organizations in the County, this was also another opportunity to work in the area.

Lessons learnt from the visit

Here are some of the lessons learnt from the visit to Samburu County that would help in the implementation of projects in Samburu County:

  • There are many opportunities and areas of intervention within the entire Samburu County, and incase of acquisition of funds, MID-P should try and spread the implementation across all the wards in the County since most partners focus their projects in Samburu North and Samburu east, leading to other wards being neglected.
  • Working closely with the County government of Samburu and the different departments relevant to the work MID-P will do within the County. Making sure that our present is felt by the County, by regularly updating them on our status when working in the area and paying courtesy visits to relevant County offices and departments, for support and good partnership.
  • Doing regular monitoring of the projects that we will be implementing in the County and doing assessment of the projects after completion to know the impact of the projects on the people living in the area, instead of just completing projects and leaving without knowing the impact it is having on the community.
